A general uprising? Why do you assume that was his goal? Deferring to Sistani? He has acquired enormous legitimacy from Sistani, and in some respects Sistani has deferred to Sadr. Name any other leader in Iraq who has established himself as willing and able to stand up to the US and Allawi? Sistani has a completely different sort of power than Sadr. Sadr certainly has more legitimacy that Allawi, and Sistani cannot afford to let Sadr get too far out in front of him as the sole opposition to the US. But I don't see where Sadr would need this confrontation to overthrow the US occupation -- that would be a ludicrous expectation. He only needed a bloody battle from which he could emerge as the guy who would not bow down to the US occupation. And emerge he did, with Sistani at his side.
