I find it strange that we put prisoners to work but not those on the public dole.

Strength of the unions. Can't even pick up trash, which has lain in the street for decades, without AFSFCME(or something like that) screaming "that is their dirt". Don't touch. Can you imagine the screams if the unemployed were, temporarily, induced to clean the streets and alleys of the local municipality at a modest wage. They could be heard all the way to the Mayor's political advisor's office. In Detroit, many buses designed for pick up of the handicapped and their wheelchairs were out service. The handicapped would sit in their chairs at the bus stop as one after the other roared by because they were not equipped to pick them up. When someone suggested bringing in temporary help to get the buses on the road the din was tremendous. Suffice to say they are still out of service. To hell with the handicapped. Let them call a cab.
