I'm sure Kerry could have found a way out. After all, how many Yale law school graduates were going to Vietnam? Answer: damn few.

Barnes (fmr Texas Lt Gov, I believe) has already admitted and apologized about his role in securing Guard service for so many sons of the privileged and connected, including George W Bush. I'll bet there are equivalent stories in the New England area, in the circles in which John Kerry traveled.

Cheney, being a Yale dropout, did not have the connections of the rich and successful, so he had to find other means of getting out.

I can only imagine that night of passion, when Cheney heard about the change of the draft to include married but childless men. "Dear, come hither, else beckons the draft...!"
