" He wasn't very sensitive in the past. Can't understand the Chechens. If they wanted the Russians to have as a goal to wipe out the Chechens to the last man, woman and child, they succeeded admirably... Chechens have been trying to get their independence from Russia for ten years. Putin won't let them be free because they are oil rich. Years ago, when the USSR occupied and then annexed Chechnya, they moved in a lot of Russians like they did with other countries they annexed. In the last ten years, they have tried to rule the country by placing a Russian in the seat of power. However, that has not worked, so they put in a Chechen loyal to Russia. He was assassinated last year. Now they have a new Chenchen in power who is beholden to Moscow. Moscow is able to control the elections because so many Russians live in Chechnya. In the meantime, the Russians have been kidnapping males under the age of 25 and torturing, maiming and killing many of them to stop the insurgents who are fighting for the country's independence. This fighting has destroyed much of the country's infrastructure and left many Chenchens homeless. Amnesty International lists Chechnya and the Russian actions in that province as some of the worst examples of human rights violations: web.amnesty.org web.amnesty.org web.amnesty.org Meanwhile, Putin is trying to grab on to Bush's star by claiming that Chenchen problems are do to international terrorists. The truth is the Chenchens hate the Russians much like other annexed territories hated the Russians. And Putin's treatment of the Chenchens since 1999 has only strengthened the resolve of the Chenchen insurgents to rid their country of them. So much negative is going on in Russia and its being ignored by our gov't and our media for whatever reasons.
