I'm beginning to think Bush is really rather intelligent. He likes to play this regular guy game--you know, "misunderestimate" and all. Dumb people just don't become President of the United States. I think Bush has a lot of slick people skills. He's manipulated his recovery from alcoholism. I'll tell you, from personal experience (yes, I'm a recovering alcoholic too), that's a great slate cleaner. It also has excellent religious underpinnings that can be manipulated too. Bush is a dry drunk! Very obsessive compulsive. Unidimensional. That show this weekend--"CNN Presents: The Mission of George W. Bush"--that was done by John King was fabulous. Bush is simply a manipulator of religion. He's found his base and he's going to use it. That fundamentalist Christian vanguard is a great set of foot soldiers. They really believe in "America--Love It or Leave It." I've been calling Bush a simple minded fool fronting a wildly mistaken ideology. I think he likes to play the fool. It gives him kind of a childish aura that makes it easier for the public to forgive his mistakes. He's really very serious about pleasing his base and being liked by them. I'm now going to start viewing him more as a serious man, not childish. Evil? I don't know. Misguided? Yes. Bright? Maybe. Dumb? No. I met a lot of Southern semi-intellectual rednecks during my years at the University of North Carolina. They just didn't have a lot of depth--kind of like Bush. People who'd never been to Europe. People who didn't give a shit where Florence, Rome, or Paris were located. People whose only reason to go to Italy would be, say, to go to the Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006. Milan is where they play soccer, not where the fashion industry is centralized or where La Scala is located. That's Bush. Just an uncultured, narrow-minded gringo. But he might be rather bright. He certainly has good people skills. But most importantly, he has some very intelligent "wingnuts" advising him. None of them have consciences. That's why the campaign is going to be very negative. Kerry's got to get used to that--and begin slinging mud every day. /john
