If we want to win by fighting them, then we have to be more brutal and crush them. If we're not prepared to be that brutal, then we need to show them a way out that works for them and for us.

These are not mutually exclusive paths. Selective crushing of the leadership and active jihadis, with development and reform carrots held out to the masses, can work together. Just don't expect quick results, it's a long-term affair.

Your suggestion on such a way out? What we are trying to do in Iraq, it seems to me, whether or not you think it's succeeding, is to show them a way out by entering into a free society with opportunity for all.

But they don't want that way out. They want an Islamic state run under fundamentalist Islamic law. Which means the continuation of many things which we can hardly think work for us, such as mutilation as the punishment for minor offenses, stoning to death as a punishment for adultery, subjegation of women, and many other social practices repugnant to Western society. To say nothing of their controlling the majority of the world's oil output with no American involvement at all, and having the ability at their whim to strangle our economy.

If you see a win-win option here, I think we would all be happy to hear about it.
