<You might also recall the various marxist-led revolutions in Latin America.>

Please Enlighten me. The Sandinistas in Nicaragua and El Salvador were eclectic freedom fighters, not primarily Communists. Even a moderate like Hilliary Clinton, donated money to CISPES (Committee in Solidarity With The People in El Salvador). I suppose a Conservative boy like you was a big Somoza fan? One thing is for sure, Buschman can be counted on to believe whatever conservative fiction his holy than thou government tells him!

I liked Allende, who was democratically elected. He was no communist either. Allende was just a Humanist with a few socialist principles, which IMO are good and appropriate in a Democratic society, in relation to Multi-National Corporations, who only care about profit and greed at the expense of the welfare and safety of most humans.

But in terms of the upcoming election, the clash of contradictions is getting even louder. And this is only the start! The REAL election campaign is only beginning. With the Republican Convention now finished, it is abundantly clear that both of the candidates stand for - war. In this American election, there is no peace candidate. Each of these two main contenders are now lauding themselves as the best warlord, and casting aspersions on the other contender's war making or war winning capabilities. Neither candidate mentions the cost.

When at war, never talk about the cost, right Hawk?

Communism, in and of itself is not a threat. When a communist nation professes to take over the world...that is a threat and then must be addressed. Who cares if Laos, or Vietnam wishes to be a communist nation? Who cares if the Soviets want to return to communism? They probably won't because the system doesn't work well, except maybe in an agricultural economy.

In Vietnam, as soon as the last American soldier left the country...the war was over. Where were the Vietnamese who wished to oust the communists? If they were truly oppressed, then the struggle would have continued. Guerilla tactics could have been brought to bear against the communists. But the Vietnamese people stopped fighting.

I think it's important to support a struggle to freedom, but it's not important to impose democracy on a nation of people who do not wish that.

That's the fundamental problem with the Vietnam war...the people themselves did not support the struggle.

What will ultimately determine the outcome in Iraq is how the people accept what has been thrust upon them. Will they support the new democracy? Will they replace it with a theocracy or another thugocracy? I think that most Americans will support people trying to do for themselves, but if it is shown that the Iraqi people will not fight for their own freedom, why should I fight for it for them?
