Jim

Something you must consider is how homes have changed in Florida. It has only been the last few decades that snow birds moving down from up north felt they had to have a 2 story or higher wood frame style house vs the more traditional and storm durable 1 floor CBS house most common down here. With these higher profile homes it is like placing a bull's eye on the side of your home.

It seems to me there's two ways to go in Florida. Cheap, disposable housing, like trailers and outright bunkers that can ride out the hurricanes. Anything else is just a major economic loss waiting to happen. Have any architects come up with hurricane proof designs for Florida? With global warming supposedly increasing the frequency and intensity of storms, it seems like a good idea.
