You have to hand it to Karl Rove. He knows how to sling the stuff without leaving any prints.

Mary, if Kerry were a Republican with Karl Rove working FOR him, the Swiftvets would still be making their charges, with Democratic money instead of Republican.

How obvious can it get? They didn't work for Bush in 2000 or 2002, they didn't even form until Howard Dean crashed and it looked like Kerry would be the nominee. They are not pro-Bush; they just hate Kerry's guts and have done since 1971.

This works for Bush functionally, obviously, but the beauty part for Rove is that he doesn't have to lift a finger; he can sit on the sidelines and look pious, which in this case means praising Kerry's honorable service.

Kerry campagned on the character reference of his Band of Brothers, and it turns out that 2/3 of his Band of Brothers loathe him. This big problem he created for himself. Karl Rove knows how to get out of the way when he sees an opponenet self-destructing.
