Sure, free-fire zones were against the Geneva Convention. How does that translate to Kerry good, Bush bad? And why does it have a bearing on the election?

I suggest that one asks these questions of swifties for so called truth...

Sure, free-fire zones were against the Geneva Convention.

Again I must interject some thought.

Vietnam war movies and Kerry have abused the term free fire zone and created some misconceptions.

The intent of the free fire zone designation was to declare certain areas where GIs could return fire at will without getting permission form a FSCOORD (Fire Support Coordinator) or other higher HQ.

It did not provide authority to abrogate the rules of war...In fact conventional American units gave each field soldier a card telling him he could not shoot civilians indiscriminantly and other rules listed here...

International Rules About Civilians

Both the fourth Geneva Convention and the two other protocols extend protections to civilians during war time.

It is important to recall how Ho Chi Minh and Saddam violated these laws.

Civilians are not to be subject to attack. This includes direct attacks on civilians and indiscriminate attacks against areas in which civilians are present.
There is to be no destruction of property unless justified by military necessity.
Individuals or groups must not be deported, regardless of motive.
Civilians must not be used as hostages.
Civilians must not be subject to outrages upon personal dignity.
Civilians must not be tortured, raped or enslaved.
Civilians must not be subject to collective punishment and reprisals.
Civilians must not receive differential treatment based on race, religion, nationality, or political allegiance.
Warring parties must not use or develop biological or chemical weapons and must not allow children under 15 to participate in hostilities or to be recruited into the armed forces.

The term Free Fire zone was eliminated from our military vocabulary, as I recall in 69.
