You are 100% correct....I left a bit early after standing my watch while in drydock once, my bacon was saved by my engineering officer who insisted writing me up was too trouble and suggested they assign me a tad of extra duty...Had it been an awol that anyone had taken "seriously" it was have resulted in a Captain's Mast(where I would have been officially read the riot act until ashamed of myself...grin)...In any event, it would have had zero bearing on my discharge....Unless anyone digs up records of President Bush being called before the "old man" formally, then they have absolutely nothing but political spin.
