I'm not good at mathematical probabilities, but i'm sure the probability of getting a tie at 269 votes each is much more likely than getting a tie at whatever number of individual votes their are nationwide.

A compromise option would be for the states to apportion their electors by the number of votes each candidate gets in the state, rather than "winner take all". They have the power to do this, several already do, and Colorado is considering that option for this election.
