CONTROVERSY DE JOUR

The major media are jumping on the Bush National Guard story with a glee they have yet to exhibit with John Kerry's record, even though media critics are questioning their timing. The major complaint against Bush is that he "gamed the system." I was there. We all gamed the system.

In 1971-72, when I was drafted and had the honor of serving in the U.S. Army, the war was dying down. Nixon was extricating us quickly from Vietnam, and troop levels were dropping daily. The military simply didn't need the massive amount of new inductees, Reservists, and National Guard the Pentagon planners had forecast.

The word went out that college graduates should file papers to cut their service short. The way to do that was to apply for graduate work and get your request seconded by your congressman. Senator John Tower wrote a letter for me. George W. applied to Harvard Business School. I applied to SMU Business School. Presto! I was out, and so was he.

Compared to Bill Clinton, who actively dodged the draft, I don't see what the fuss is about. Another claim was that Bush didn't fulfill all his service requirements. Again, I was there. The honest truth is, there wasn't anything to do. Unless you were assigned to combat, which was so unlikely as to be almost impossible--I know because I tried to volunteer--the days were spent playing poker, reading books, and, maybe, polishing your boots.

Bush didn't avoid his service anymore than I did. We both did what we could to avoid the worst thing a young man can face: boredom.

Little Green Footballs has nailed it. Used Microsoft Word to retype the document--came out exactly like the one Killian allegedly typed. Very, uh, embarrassing.

I opened Microsoft Word, set the font to Microsoft’s Times New Roman, tabbed over to the default tab stop to enter the date “18 August 1973,” then typed the rest of the document purportedly from the personal records of the late Lieutenant Colonel Jerry B. Killian.

And my Microsoft Word version, typed in 2004, is an exact match for the documents trumpeted by CBS News as “authentic.”

Drudge has picked up the buzz:

I just retyped the August 18 memo in Word using Times New Roman 12 point, my usual type face, and by dog, it does break exactly the same, and look exactly the same.

By gum, by golly, by gosh and by gee.

Who'd a thunk it?
