The "south" was the fiefdom of the French, and then it was ours.

All of Vietnam was a fiefdom of the French. That was before the war we are discussing. The South had a government. It was influenced by the US but it wasn't a US colony or fiefdom. It was corrupt but no more so then many other governments. It was abusive but probably less so then the North.

Reunification was their choice.

Reunification was the goal of Ho Chi Minh...but only if both the N and S were under his Communist leadership.

The South wanted to remain free. The North had no say.
