<and now they are free.>
<"That is a bit of an exaggeration don't you think?">

No, they ARE free. We did manage to set them back 50 years in terms of their ability to develop a more liberal political culture -- but in time they will find their own way forward and they have made some progress as they heal. The vast majority of Vietnamese were born AFTER the end of the American war. But at least they got onto first base -- they are free of foreign domination.

The Chinese are also free. We do hundreds of billions of dollars of business with them and the number of American tourists is surging. In time, China will also find its own way to reconcile the political and economic demands and needs of its people in a more liberal political and economic system. They have been moving that way at their own pace. But they are free of foreign domination -- that is the beginning and it is a cherished freedom. Would they like more personal freedoms -- yes, but they would not trade all the personal freedom in the world for even one minute of foreign domination.
