Ah, finally, a name! Marcel Mately, the document and handwriting expert used to authenticate the documents for CBS News and 60 MINUTES, asserts that copies of the memos critics are examining have been degraded by reproduction though photocopying, computer scanning and faxing and are not reliable representations of the memos.

How interesting! "photocopying, computer scanning and faxing" results in fake kerning?

BUT THE OWNER OF THE COMPANY THAT DISTRIBUTES THIS TYPING STYLE.... SAYS IT HAS BEEN AVAILABE SINCE 1931.

Times Roman dates from the 1930s IN BOOKS. Is Mately claiming these documents were typeset? Typewriters did not use Times Roman! Times Roman looks awful as a monospace font. Furthermore, Times New Roman differs from Times Roman, has he checked the points of difference? Times New Roman dates from the late 1980s.

....IN FACT, OTHER BUSH MILITARY RECORDS ALREADY OFFICIALLY RELEASED BY THE WHITE HOUSE ITSELF SHOW THE SAME SUPERSCRIPT.

HERE'S ONE..... FROM 1968.

Lovely. Link, please? I think CBS has learned the real moral of this lesson: DO NOT PUT THE EVIDENCE ON THE WEB

MATLEY FINDS THE SIGNAT'URES TO BE SOME OF THE MOST COMPELLING EVIDENCE

Guess I'm no expert then, because to my amateur eyes they are completely different. Different J, different K.

"IT VERGED ON OUTRIGHT CORRUPTION IN TERMS OF THE FAVORS THAT WERE DONE, THE POWER THAT WAS TRADED. AND IT WAS UNCONSCIONABLE. FROM A MORAL AND ETHICAL STANDPOINT. IT WAS UNCONSCIONABLE

Here we come to the heart of the matter: CBS believes the STORY is true, so it doesn't really matter if the DOCUMENTS are fake. Didn't Dan Rather just say as much? didn't he say the memos raise "important questions"? As the Italians say, "si non e vero, e bene trovato"

Lileks is right. It's like watching the building hang in the air. They can't hide the evidence anymore, do they think nobody will care if they admit presenting forgeries on this scale?

I think their viewers will care. Then I think their advertisers will care, very much. Another fall of Howell Raines in the offing? TWT
