Asked if he was troubled by the handwriting and document analysts who say some of the typography and spacing did not exist in the early 1970s, Rather said he could not rule out the possibility of a hoax but sees no need for an internal inquiry.

Some CBS employees, who asked not to be identified while questioning their bosses' actions, expressed concern that the network had issued only a terse statement Thursday, when the authenticity of the documents was first questioned and until yesterday had refused to name any of the experts it had consulted or provide an on-the-record spokesman. One staff member, who has examined the documents but did not work on the "60 Minutes" piece, saw potential problems with them: "There's a lot of sentiment that we should do an internal investigation."

So Rather says, who cares if the docs are fraudulent, everyone knows that Bush sucked? and the rest of CBS news replies, Dan, if you want to jump off the cliff, would you mind not taking us with you?

Wonder how much CBS is paying him??? Matley said last night that a "60 Minutes" executive had asked him not to give interviews.

So CBS just wants us to "believe" them....WHO is their "Confidential Source"...Does this mean that CBS has the original documents? Did CBS ask this "scorce" WHY they waited until now, the 5th time or so that the Democrats have tried to smear Bush with his military records? Does this "confidential source" know its illegal to try to doctor Federal Records???

Before airing Wednesday's segment, he said, CBS "vetted" the confidential source who provided the memos and concluded that "he did have the ability to get access to these documents and he was being truthful."

Mary Mapes, former very liberal Seattlite sounded familiar...(John Carlson, KVI Seattle, and former Governor candidate knows her and talked about her today...) She worked with Dan Rather on the James Byrd dragging murder trial.....links below.

All I could think of is the terrible ad the Dems ran against GWB with this murder....

Mary Mapes, who helped "60 Minutes" break the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq.

I knew Mary Mapes (from Seattle, now a CBS producer) sounded familiar: She and Dan Rather were involved in this: Free Press vs Fair Trial Nov 12, 1999....

A dispute between CBS News and a Texas prosecutor ended this week when CBS handed over the transcript of an interview with dragging death defendant Shawn Berry -- after publishing it on the Internet. After this background report, media correspondent Terence Smith talks with the prosecutor and a first amendment lawyer representing CBS.

CBS producer ordered to jail for withholding outtakes
Prosecutors in the capital-murder case over the dragging death of a black man obtained an order sending producer Mary Mapes to jail for refusing to turn over outtakes of an interview with Shawn Allen Berry, while anchor Dan Rather was in court in New York City arguing he should not be forced to turn over the same tapes.
CBS news producer Mary Mapes was granted a last-minute emergency appeal and avoided an order to report to Jasper County Jail by 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5 for refusing to turn over outtakes of the network's "60 Minutes II" interview with alleged murderer Shawn Allen Berry.
