I know you didn't ask me, Eric, but it looks to me like Intel is grasping at straws trying to rescue the disaster that is the Itanium. My own opinion is that Sun would have to be nuts to lift a finger, or to move so much as one junior software engineer away from Opteron to Itanium. Why in the world would they put a dime behind an almost certainly doomed effort to make Itanium successful, when Opteron is such a superior design?

Edit: By 'superior design' I don't mean on benchmarks, I mean on getting the critical mass of applications and IT mindshare necessary to create the "ecosystem" that Intel wants Sun to create.

I suppose it depends on how much Intel is willing to pay. It would have to be a lot, and I doubt that's what they have in mind.

Given the number of Itaniums being sold, I doubt the dedication of resources would be warranted unless either Intel sweetened things considerably (unlikely, given the attitude evidenced in the article) or Itanium customers were so desperate for an OS that they'd pay dearly (and in that case why wouldn't they just pick something other than Itanium?).

I say let Intpaq sink with it.

JMHO.

>>Sounds like SUNW could provide Intel a software OS platform in SOLARIS if they all wanted to move forward together. I think SUNW should go for it and promote the Itanium chip along with the AMD line. This will make a good bridge between their next generation chip and an easy migration path for their customers.
