because its a strategy they've been backed into. this wasn't the PLAN. it is now a plan of SURVIVAL. You mean like in 1995 when Microsoft turned on a dime from being oriented to "information at your fingertips" CD-ROMS to changing their entire strategy to revolve around the network in general and the internet in particular? They were (properly) lauded for that strategic switcheroo, which they had certainly NOT been planning, and which they were backed into when Gates woke up and got the picture one day. So MSFT switches as a matter of survival, and they're geniuses (with a monopoly). Sun switches as a matter of survival, and they're clowns. They may in fact be clowns, but not because they belatedly woke up and smelled the coffee. --QS
