This NYT article just about puts it together. We now know that Mapes got it from Burkett. Burkett is on record that he got ahold of the Kerry camp about it. So WHO called WHO?

1)Did Burkett call Mapes without Kerrycamp prompting?

2) Did Mapes call Burkett because of a Kerrycamp call?

3) Is there anyone else involved?

4) Does Rather think he can get away with blaming it on Mapes?

"Tick, tick, tick."

But an official said yesterday that the actual documents - six in total, four of which were used in the report - did not fall into CBS News's possession until Sept. 3. That was less than a week before the report ran.

So what, pray, was CBS' all-fired hurry? They couldn't wait a few more days to check the documents? How many eyes at CBS even saw those documents before they went out? It's impossible to believe that it was many - surely someone would have noticed these 1973 memos were Word docs.

And who was Mapes' "unimpeachable source"?

Ah well. Lots of noses on the scent now.

Mr. Bush's campaign officials, meanwhile, do not seem as if they are going to let up on the pressure.

"There's a threshold question," Nicolle Devenish, Mr. Bush's campaign communications director, said. "If a media outlet is about to go on the air with a story, there is kind of an assumption that they're going on the air with documents that are authentic when they attack the president of the United States of America 50 days before a national election."

I call this knife-twisting with finesse. Along with Bush's "questions need to be answered". The shoe's on the other foot now, eh?

Did ANYONE at CBS bother to ask WHY and HOW whoever (Burkett????) gave them documents from: "Mr. Killian's personal file" got these files? Were they on Government property? Were they stolen files? From where? How did this person come to be in possession of these files?????

During an interview yesterday Mr. Howard said that Ms. Mapes, who broke the news for CBS about the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal earlier this year, continually pledged confidence in her sources, who were said to have access to Mr. Killian's personal file.

i hope that dan lather is fired over this mess. he gets all the lime light and he should also get the ax... this is his tar baby and it is not going away..... the longer he delays resigning from cbs, the tar will continue to build up and up.... if cbs does not cut dan lather loose, cbs itself will cease to exist....

Why most agree Mary has to go it seems she is already being sacrificed while Rather is covering his ass, well attempting to at least. Rather should be (have been) fired. No retirement bennies- nada,, out the door just to save a shred of credibility for the rest at cBS

LB, Rather's daughter involved in this?

Enroute to San Diego Thur AM, I heard a comment/supposition at around 11 in the morning on 1170AM that I cannot for the life of me remember the source.

Anyway, the comment/supposition was that Dan Rather's daughter worked for the Travis County, TX, Democratic Party and would be found by anyone that "walked back the cat" to the source of the documents. Supposedly, this fact made Dan doubly sure that he did not want all sources to be revealed...

I was on the freeway and did not write down the source of the comment...I figured it would come out in the blogs or here, but I havent't seen it. Have I missed it?

I see from the Travis County Dem web site that Rush brought this out in his show Friday...guess I missed that, too...jj
