Military draft

CBS News Shilling for Kerry With Military Draft Rumors?

The Kerry campaign’s latest scare tactic for young people is to raise the idea that a second Bush term will bring back the military draft. Right now there is an Internet e-mail chain letter circulating and being mass mailed to college students and their parents making the false claim of Bush’s “secret plan” to begin plucking young folks off the streets and shoving them in the military.

The first Old Media outlet to run with the false story was none other than CBS. On Tuesday they ran a story of a frightened mother (and supposed Bush supporter) Beverly Cocco. CBS News Correspondent Richard Schlesinger ran the piece which included this statement in the starter, “Beverly is petrified about a military draft – and she's not alone. There's an undercurrent of anxiety; mass e-mails are circulating among parents worried their kids could be called up.”

The mass e-mails have been discredited as nothing more than scare tactics and the only person talking about firing up the military draft is John Kerry supporter Charlie Rangel, a liberal democratic congressman from New York. CBS failed to mention either fact in yet another biased story designed to hurt the president politically.

And in a blatant attempt to skew the story against President George W, Bush CBS attempted to portray Ms. Cocco as nothing more than a concerned mom, who told the network, “I go to bed every night and I pray and I actually get sick to my stomach," she says. "I'm very worried; I'm scared. I'm absolutely scared; I'm petrified." She’s so petrified that she is part of an “anti-draft” group called People Against the Draft.

But CBS failed to disclose that fact.

Credibility must no longer matter to anyone at the network, as they are now apparently comfortable with the appearance of a network that is nothing more than political activists who will stop at nothing to attempt to discredit the president. INDC Journal caught up with Richard Schlesinger who told the blog that CBS "played it straight." Producer Linda Karas went one further with this unbelievable statement, “The truth of the e-mails were absolutely irrelevant to the piece, because all the story said was that people were worried. It’s a story about human beings that are afraid of the draft. We did not say that this (e-mail) was true, it’s just circulating. We are not verifying the e-mail."

The e-mails were the stated reason for the story. They were absolute lies and had already been discredited. But just as CBS did when they used forged and fraudulent documents in an attempt to hurt the president CBS has used this untrue document, an e-mail full of lies, and has ran a story based on those lies.

They have obviously learned nothing fro the Rathergate forgery scandal. Who can believe anything this network reports?
