There are three reasons why we have invaded, conquered and are occupying Iraq. One analyst created the acronym "OIL" for these reasons:

O = Oil. We now have control over some of the world's richest oil fields.

I = Israel. We have removed a threat to the nation of Israel, and through our presence in the region discourage overt attacks against it.

L = Logistics. We are in the process of creating large, permanent military bases in Iraq. This means we will not have to go begging for space everytime we are involved in a military conflict in the area.

The first and third reasons are legitimate, though morally dubious, rationales. The second is not. We derive very little benefit (none that I can see) from our relationship with Israel, which consists primarily of our giving it free advanced weaponry. Most of the U.S. kids dying in Iraq probably couldn't even find it on a map.
