Rangel thinks a draft will result in sons and daughters of wealthier people serving, resulting in reluctance to put them in harm's way. Actually, it would result in a much less professional and career-oriented military, which is one of our current military's main strengths. We need specialized careerists, not short-term slackers and cannon fodder.

I think Rangel's reasons are:

1. Blacks are disproportionally in harms way when there is war. A mandatory draft might even the playing field.

2. There is nothing that would galvanize the anti-war movement more than reinstituting the mandatory draft.
