Yes it is important to look at the absolute numbers.
Some back of the napkin guesses and calculations.

If about half of Vioxx use was chronic(a wild guess) - $ 1B annually at $1000/yr cost makes 1M users.
IF results of the study are reflective of true risk that would means vioxx associated with 7500 cardiac events over 3 years.
