For those that aren't quite following this discussion...

SI used to allow us to type in shortcuts to posts. For example, Ira's post to which I am responding used to be able to be represented as #reply-20586181 instead of the traditional full URL: Message 20586181. I would think the shortcut was converted to an "A HREF" command (HTML syntax that allows underlined text of choice to be displayed, e.g. "click here", as opposed to the actual underlying URL) on the fly, as opposed to being converted and saved in the database. This way, as you pointed out, as long as the record numbers were consistent, you could change the conversion routine as often as you like without having to change the shortcut.

We can debate how useful such shortcuts might be (as I wrote earlier, they are actually more of a pain to write than just cutting and pasting a full URL, but allow for easier readability), but they probably should be preserved at least for historical reasons. However, whenever you have to parse text on the fly for any reason (e.g. to look for shortcuts) you add overhead, so reinstating shortcuts is not a no-brainer, just desirable IMO.
