That answer your questions?

There are people who are just obnoxious and disruptive.
And there are people who are presenting viewpoints and facts the moderator doesn't want heard, too.

Also, moderated threads aren't everywhere. There are open threads where noone can be banned,
Those are becoming fewer and fewer. Admin now does something I was previously told was impossible: They will convert an unmoderated thread to moderated. And that has happened numerous times.

As a conservative, I'd think you'd be in favor of empowering people to make decisions within their domain.
Aren't you one of the people who screamed about the people allowed into GWB campaign rallies being scrrened? This is its equivalent.

It's like saying you can't decide who to allow to remain in your home
SI isn't your home. It's an internet site. You don't own it. Bob does. Even if you spend all your time here(which you clearly can't) it isn't.

Moderation has its place.
Yeah. In the garbage can of history.

There are some things that could be done to limit abuses. Say, SI software could track the number of different posters on a thread in the last month and limit total bans to 5% or 10% of that. If the number of bans exceeds the limit, the thread is notified. If he does nothing with a few days, the software cuts from the top or bottom of the list.
