Neither point by point, nor sum, or internal consistency of his points. Kerry left a number of openings, but Bush jumped on only a few of them. Bush to me looked (well, after about first 20 to 30 minutes) like he was sleepy, tired, or had a about 3 beers (which is where I usually start to get sleepy). It was clearly an off night for Bush. On the other hand, Kerry may have won a tactical victory on style, and by failure of Bush to jump all over the weak points Kerry was making, maybe Kerry muddied the waters enough for the style to prevail. Who knows. What I wonder is how this changes the election equation. Kerry's base was a little dispireted, resigned to defeat, and this debate may give them some hope. What I wonder about is the anti war people. Have they learned that Kerry is a BS artist, that his latest somewhat hawkish position is just to fool enough of the centrists to get elected, or do they take him latest statements seriously? Dick Morris says that some 2/3 of Kerry supporters want out of Iraq now. Certainly this thread confirms it. What is stronger, their hate of Bush, or their anti-war position? I suspect their hate of Bush, but you never know. Kerry is counting on both sides (pro war and anti war) to give him the benefit of the doubt. He is counting that both sides will believe only the those statements of Kerry that agree with their position, and will dismiss the statements disagreeing with their position as just BS to get elected. This calculation may very well work for Kerry unless Bush campaign hammers it from now to the election. Joe
