Lyndon Johnson's dragging out the war, refusing to block the Ho Chi Minh trail, refusal to close North Viet Nams harbors, the policy of gradual escalation... those factors lost the war, not Jane Fonda or John Kerry. The Viet Nam experience led Colin Powell to coin the "Powell Doctrine", stating in essence that whenever America goes to war it must do so with crystal clear objectives and overwhelming military force. George Bush followed this advice in 1991. George Bush jr ignored advice that he plan on at least 200,000 troops for Iraq and instead relied on Rumsfeld's theory that less troops could do the job. That miscalulation led to postwar looting and incidents that are the roots of our troubles today. In Afghanistan... again, we used minimum force... and some believe that allowed Osama to escape from Tora Bora.
