Actually, the vast majority of spyware is surreptitiously planted within pop-ups, especially pop-up advertisements, and many times the site(s) that host(s)s the ads is/are completely unaware of the malevolent nature of the ads. The host site is interested only in the revenues received, which generally speaking, underwrites the costs of the site(s). Most often the sites are relatively popular sites, found near the top of the list on a Google search, and have fairly innocuous web addresses. Most often the sites provide music, performing arts information or celebrity web sites, free movies, free games and other "bait" offerings...
