Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld appeared Monday to back off earlier statements suggesting Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein had links to al Qaeda.....

When asked about any connection between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda, Rumsfeld said, "To my knowledge, I have not seen any strong, hard evidence that links the two."

That was Monday. Today is Tuesday. He's backed off on what he said on Monday....

Rumsfeld tries to clarify remarks on Saddam and al-Qaida

PENTAGON Donald Rumsfeld says he's being "misunderstood."
Speaking in New York yesterday, the defense secretary was asked to describe the connection between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaida. At first, he wouldn't answer. Then he said, "To my knowledge, I have not seen any strong, hard evidence that links the two."

Now, Rumsfeld has released a statement saying that his comment "regrettably was misunderstood."

He said that for two years, he's spoken of ties between al-Qaida and Iraq -- based on information from former C-I-A director George Tenet. In the statement, Rumsfeld said he'd seen "solid evidence of the presence in Iraq of al-Qaida members."

But when he spoke in New York, Rumsfeld said the intelligence on the possible Saddam-al-Qaida link had shifted "in amazing ways" in the past year. And he said there were "many differences of opinion in the intelligence community."

"Shifting in amazing ways" is absolutely the right phrase.
