There were wildly differing interpetations of the debate by pundits. Republicans were thrilled with cheney's performance and the democrats equally with edwards. I saw it essentially as a draw. The Marshall piece that scott posted was very interesting although i in no way thought it to be a blowout.
I have made this point over and over. I think that bush/cheney deserve to be praised for the way they handled 9/11 but fired over iraq--not necessarily for going in or the faulty intel but for the dishonesty regarding the progress of the war to date. But i also said when ceo screws up, there are tens or maybe even hundreds of potential replacements. Here there is just one and his name is John Kerry. If it was John Kennedy, i would be certain now and would turn off the rest of the campaign and go watch baseball. But i am not at all certain that kerry is up to the task.
And a little bird in the back of my head tells me that Bush/Cheney might better able to do what is necessary in a second term unfettered by any concerns pertaining to reelection. They dont give a damn if McCain or Clinton is elected in 08. And that same little bird i am sure tells kerry folks the same thing. Question is whether bush/cheney unplugged leads to a clear victory in the WOT or blows up the world. Damn this is an important election but at the same time its a classic crapshoot. From their records, neither candidate installs confidence in me. And bush will win if this all stays the same. For Kerry, he must become more clear. For instance on iraq, stop saying he will talk to the french and germans and somehow get a 100,000 troops. Be honest with the american people about what you will do and what will happen. Dont spin like Bush/Cheney and then maybe you can win. MIke
