The really shocking part of this information is that this is the average personal wealth of a 50 year old.

• Average personal wealth of a 50-year-old American, including home equity: less than $40,000.

These are people who have only another 15 years until age 65 to save for retirement.

It seems that most of these people will be working for the rest of their lives. Surviving on Social Security alone usually entails a diet of tinned cat food.
