One doesn't have to agree with the current French government, or be a big fan of the government at the time, in order to state that France is not an enemy of the US now and was not the enemy of the US in the early 19th century.

Impressment is not BS, it was a serious issue. And it was not just merhcant ships that were raided but also a US war ship. That's about as clear of case of an act of war that can be imagined short of a massive direct attack on the US.
