I thought this was your point:

"the same category, i.e., cheating for personal gain but not a threat to society".

So my question to you is how do you think she cheated for personal gain?

Martha was convicted and sentenced so that the prosecutors could appear on TV. A lot. In economic terms, it was the prosecutors who wasted public funds in order to bag some "big game."

The "rationale" for sending her to jail as a felon was to send a message, social engineering, so that everyone would know that 1) no one is above the law and 2) you better never lie to investigators. What the stupid, vainglorious prosecutors forgot was that their social message comes out: You better never, ever speak to investigators without a full immunity agreement. Silence is golden, whether it's a securities fraud investigation or the kidnapping of a young girl in your neighborhood. Mum is the word.
