It was about oil.

Saddam had it, Cheney wanted it.

All of the rationales for the invasion that were spun were lies.

This is what you wrote:
"Clinton enforced the embargo? Re-writing history again? Support for the sanctions was crumbling. They would have ended soon, and Saddam could re-embark on his WMD programs. The report said so"
Now you cite a story that essentially says this guy who ended up in a hole dining on rat pate was on the verge of building a bomb in two years. Give me a break. The report, in fact, describes a yawning gap between intent and capability. Beyond that, it asserts that Saddam;s over-arching goal was elimination of sanctions -- so much so that he sacrificed what was left of his weapons programs to avoid revelations that would impede lifting of sanctions.
Let me spell it out to you: Despite all the fog about who sold what to whom, the plain fact is the guy was toothless because of the sanctions and inspections. That's why he ended up in a hole dining on rat pate. M2
