I agree with you about R&D spending, esp on alternative energy, which can produce multi-faceted dividends (there would be no need to go grab oilfields and get our youngsters killed trying to defend them, for one).

However, I think we have come so far down the path to disaster that high inflation triggered by a serious devaluation of the dollar is almost inevitable. Worse, with our astronomical levels of federal, state, local, corporate and personal debts, hyperinflation is the only way out of this mess -- all other alternatives are even more disastrous! :-(

We spend BILLIONS in RND. For F-22 fighters, star wars missile defense systems and other big ticket military stuff. We're the LAST country on earth doing this. Our previous generation of fighters were superior to any other fighters on the globe. The F-22's are superior to them - why?
We spend more on the military than the next 10 countries on the list COMBINED.
