If your router has a firewall it's ok to leave it connected but if you'll be naked to the world during the install, I'd do it while offline. After the reinstall, I always turn the builtin firewall on during windows updates. I then turn off the XP firewall and install my ZoneAlarm while offline. I have some sort of firewall operating at all times while connected to the net.

You will need to get the updates. Choose Service pack 2a. Service Packs roll all previous updates up into them.

The real problem wiht SP2 is if you accidentally click block and you want to allow access. It is a pain to fix.
