UPDATE 2-Strong quake rocks Taiwan, no reports of damage

(Adds details)
TAIPEI, Oct 15 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake in the Pacific Ocean off Taiwan rocked the northeast of the country on Friday, shaking office buildings in the capital Taipei, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, officials said.

The epicentre of the quake, which measured 7.0 on the Richter scale and struck just after noon at 0408 GMT, was about 110 km (68 miles) east of Ilan on the northeastern coast, at a depth of 59 km (37 miles), the Central Weather Bureau said in a statement.

The tremor lasted for nearly one minute.

The magnitude in Taipei was recorded as four on the Richter scale, it said.

Earthquakes occur frequently in Taiwan, which lies on a seismically active stretch of the Pacific basin.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) (2330.TW: Quote, Profile, Research) (TSM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , the world's top contract chipmaker, confirmed it had no immediate reports of damage from the earthquake, but would conduct an inspection.

Chinese Petroleum Corp [CHIP.UL] said its refinery in northern Taiwan was operating normally.

One of Taiwan's most deadly quakes occurred in September 1999. Measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, it killed more than 2,400 people and destroyed or damaged 50,000 buildings.
