DETROIT (AP) - A new poll of likely Michigan voters showed 48 percent backing U.S. Sen. John Kerry and 43 percent backing President Bush. Majorities also said the war in Iraq was not worthwhile, was badly handled by Bush and had made the United States less safe.

The poll of 600 people was conducted Monday through Wednesday for The South Bend (Ind.) Tribune and WSBT-TV by Research 2000. The results have a margin of sampling error of 4 percentage points up or down.
Two percent said they support independent Ralph Nader, and 7 percent were unsure.

Democrat Al Gore carried Michigan by 5.2 percentage points in 2000. Michigan has 17 electoral votes.

Bush and Kerry held the last of three scheduled debates Wednesday night.

A Sept. 22-28 poll of 830 Michigan voters showed Kerry backed by 48 percent, Bush by 46 percent and Nader by 2 percent, with 4 percent unsure. The poll for the Detroit Free Press had a margin of error of 3.6 points.

Another recent poll, conducted Sept. 20-24 for the newsletter Inside Michigan Politics, showed 45 percent of 600 registered voters backing Kerry, 43 percent Bush, 1 percent Nader and 11 percent unsure. The poll had a 4-point error margin.

In the latest poll, 51 percent of those interviewed said they had a favorable impression of Kerry, 40 percent unfavorable and 9 percent were undecided. Forty-six percent said they had a favorable view of Bush, 48 percent unfavorable and 6 percent were undecided.

On the Iraq war, 54 percent said the situation in Iraq did not warrant the U.S. decision to go to war. Forty-one percent said the war was warranted, and 5 percent were unsure.

By a margin of 55 percent to 42 percent, those polled said they disapproved of Bush's handling of the war. Three percent were unsure. And by a 54-44 percent margin, they said the Iraq war has made America less safe. Two percent were unsure.

"That's why Kerry wins Michigan,'' said Delair Ali, whose company conducted the poll. By contrast, voters in neighboring Indiana generally support the war and Bush's handling of it.

Research 2000's poll of 602 likely Indiana voters Sunday-Tuesday found 54 percent backing Bush, 38 percent Kerry and 8 percent undecided. The results had a 4-point margin of error.
