I'm not sure that the polls are in conflict....

It's easily possible for Bush to have a 4 point-or-so national lead, and not the same in some battlegrounds --- the battlegrounds are, after all, a SUB-SET... and each State has individual characteristics.

(PS --- IMO, one I immediately had while watching the final debate, Kerry was so flat and boring that it would be fair to say that there was a 'charisma gap'. Although more of the undecideds come closer to most of Kerry's policy positions then to Bush's, the near-total lack of positive emotion out of Kerry could have EASILY accounted for a national drop in his popularity numbers of such a magnitude.)
