That animal is just another example of how humans only differ in degree and not kind from other animals. I'll bet the story you read was "Sundiver" by David Brin. One little correction, if humans hadn't of had those two clients they would have been taken as clients themselves by some other race. One of the tensions in the books is that some races feel giving humanity an equal footing was a mistake... Good series of novels. You'd like Brin's politics. Do a web search on him.
