"We have to get back to the place we were, where terrorists are not the focus of our lives, but they're a nuisance," Kerry told writer Matt Bai. "As a former law-enforcement person, I know we're never going to end prostitution. We're never going to end illegal gambling. But we're going to reduce it, organized crime, to a level where it isn't on the rise. It isn't threatening people's lives every day, and fundamentally, it's something that you continue to fight, but it's not threatening the fabric of your life."

I had seen the Kerry statement in passing. Then I saw the fuss so I went back to make sure of what he said. My understanding of what was said was like Kinsley's--wanting to get back to a Symbionese Liberation Army level of concern. It's hard to imagine that others might actually think Kerry might consider Khobar towers a mere "nuisance." I suspect that the latter version must be more political hay-making than honest interpretation. But like a lot of what's going on now, what we interpret is a function of how we perceive the risk and how we handle risk. Some here find me and those like me "naive" while I find them "hysterical." I guess that colors one's interpretation.
