Yes, dishonesty and hypocrisy and hidden malevolent self-interest turn people off in a big way. The Republicans seem to be full of it.

Personal freedom and individualism takes second place to "what God says" and what the big fella says is what they will tell you he says and if you don't do what they say he says then look out!!

When someone doesn't live up to their ideals, why does that bug you? Does it really say anything about the ideal?

O'Reilly--before the way he shuts down his guests turned me irrevocably off--was that he is more a libertarian type of conservative than a traditionalist, Bill Bennet type. IMO that mitigates the hypocrisy a tad. It's the holier than thou types whose less than holy personal practices really rankle.

It seems to me conservative types are more into the kinkier and immediate gratification (substance abuse) stuff (Limbaugh, O'Reilly, etc.) and the democrats are more direct in their sins (Kennedy, Kennedy, Clinton, Hart, etc.).

Not to mitigate sins, but if you can compartalmentalize (aside: if you get the drift - these senior moments are killing me - the synapses are not functioning) instead of mixing it all up, you are a lot better off.
