Re: "George W Bush is smart"

He is not smart.

And that's a plus... in America. Actually, Bush LOOKS as if he's not smart. As for Kerry, he'll lose because he looks TOO smart. Apply the Peter principle and you'll agree that most Americans --including Repubs-- would hail Kerry as the next Secretary of State, a new Kissinger, not a new JFK....

"- this country probably did move too fast into the future for certain segments of the population so it is taking a pause and a step backward to adjust to all the change over the past few decades"

The backlash started over 25 years ago in the aftermath of the failure in Vietnam. What we have now is the struggle over whether we should start moving forward again or move even further back. I suspect that in the end we will move forward, but prying their cold, dead hands off the levers of power isn't an easy task...

Come to think of it, it very well may be the impending failure in Iraq that is the trigger for finally kicking the conservatives into the background.

(sarcasm on)
In fact, let's just bring the Taliban to the USA - they would fit right in with Bush.
(sarcasm off)

Many people, such as Jay Leno's wife, brought the abusive practices of the Taliban to public attention prior to 9/11. Liberals advocated email chain letters to plea for them to change, but Bush ordered the invasion of Afghanistan and put the Taliban out of business. And this is one aspect of Bush's anti-terrorism policy that Kerry and Edwards do not criticize.

So it's curious that you associate Bush with the Taliban when he is the single individual deserving the most credit for their demise, and his action is seemingly without opposition.
