Re: "Blue Laws" -- I grew up in New Orleans but moved to Baton Rouge in 3rd grade. Maybe 6 years later my mother and I went to NO to see a concert -- needed to buy stockings (this was probably before pantyhose) and were amazed to see that it was against the law to buy stockings in NO on Sunday! This was mid 60's. As I recall, you could not buy cosmetics, either! That entire aisle in Woolworth's (remember Woolworth's?) was blocked off!
