I don't think the trend is slowing, it's increasing with more players in the mix now. It's not just two it's more like 8 with more in the offing.

No one has anywhere near the arsenals of the US and Russia. The only real new players are India, Pakistan and Israel [The French and others have belonged to the club for quite a while.] Some assert that NK has the capability, but NK has never tested a weapon.

I agree that there are more countries pursuing a nuclear capability but I don't expect that any of them will ever have a capability to match the US and Soviet Union at their peaks. The only possibility might be China.

What will be the impetus to spark an economic recovery this time?

Good question. Another stock market bubble, maybe.
