It is common practice in surveys, when probing intolerance, to ask people what they think and then ask them what they think other people think. The idea behind that is that people don't want to admit to bigotry so they lie. If you ask them what others think, the answer you get is what they, themselves, really think but won't tell you.

I think it's probably true that some people will lie rather than admit bigotry in a survey. Whether the way surveys compensate for that is valid, I don't have a clue. If you go with the numbers reported for what people think society thinks, you're probably overestimating. But if you go with the numbers reported for what people say of themselves, I'm pretty sure you're underestimating. My WAG would be that you'd need to at least split the difference.
