South China Sea -- a very "hot" spot. half dozens countries are there fighting each other for sovereignty<g>. At the best, I think has to jointly explore it. Although China has started doing some research there already.

East China Sea, up to now, seems only has natural gas, not oil

Some big boys have recently pulled out from JVs (joint venture) since the reserves were not economically significant enough to them... I don't have the link ... or a least that was the stated reason... I think China is looking beyond the South China Sea... FWIW..
