Sorry for repetition, but I'd love to hear thoughts on this from someone who has real doubts going in. Thanks.

ork, it is in the US interest to have a strong foothold in the ME. This policy was valid also under Clinton (check it with DOE if you want). At that time the US was trying to secure the Caspian basin and it proved to difficult.

Iraq was a easier bet to stop the expansion of radical Islam to take over the energy sources of the western world from Kazakhstan to the Black Sea to the Atlantic.

Europe had a different strategy which was to bow to any type of tyrannical regime no matter who is in charge with disregard to anything as long as they can line their pockets with “oil money”.

The other danger on the horizon was the involvement of Russia in Iraq which would bring back the old order.

The big picture was that the US will loose influence on two very critical regions rich in energy resources - the ME & North Africa and the Caspian Basin, at a time that China / India et-al started to increase demand.

Policy is not done just before election it is a long process over many years. Bush developed a different approach after 9/11 and I think that the event scared the sh*&^t out of the administration realizing that a small group of organized people can bring the Western World to it’s knees – therefore fast action was needed.

Same dawned on Western Europe and that is why they agreed to participate in Afghanistan and eliminate the Taliban by sending troops. Until then no one cared that US soldier were blown to pieces by fundamental Islamist. Old Europe has it's own agenda and they do not care of the safety of US citizen or their loss of life.

What happen after that, was the fact that European Politicians were deep to their chests in the Iraqi morass and Russia was dreaming of easy pickings in the Iraqi oil industry and more leverage over the biggest world oil importer the US as was France et-al … action needed to proceed quickly and take out two or tree birds with the same move.

One, Libya’s Quadafy cave in after Saddam was captured, two Iraq may succeed after all and last Pakistan was taken of the brink of a nuclear war with India which would have thrown the whole world in a destructive swirl wind.

After losing influence in Iraq, one of Russia's response was to destroy Lukoil and take over their own natural resources after realizing that their Chairman will sell out to the devil – e.g. US Exxon Mobil ... leaving Moscow Putin even less relevant in the world after loosing it’s influence in Iraq, more so that Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania and Poland joined the US in Iraq ... rising red alarms in the Kremlin quarter.

Well things are much more complicate if you take into account the US forces in Bulgaria, Romania and Georgia … and various “Stan’s” you will understand Russian paranoia and the unease in China. On top of all that “Old Europe” feels left out and starting to be were they belong – meaningless in world power politics and this brought up Old Europe ire against the Bush administration …. more so that all of a sudden China India, Brazil etc. are marching to the political forefront weighting in more influence than lets say little France and their corrupt leadership.

….. well will stop here
