Amy, People generally understood why it was important not to bring religion into public school. You're trying to change history. Back then, school prayer was as acceptable as teaching the alphabet. Only after lawsuits by activist atheists did the practice end. Further lawsuits then pushed this nation to the point where even a Christmas tree on public property is considered a violation of the "establishment" clause. Sure, I wasn't around when school prayer existed, and even to me, the concept seems so quaint now, if not alien. But I know what the original purpose of the 1st Amendment was, which was to allow religious expression to fluorish under a diverse free market of ideas. These days, especially with our "politically correct" thought police out there, "separation of church and state" means restricting religion out of areas deemed "religion-free" zones. Tenchusatsu
